Diabetes Management at School

I am delighted to announce that Eli Lilly (Australia) has recently published a wonderful tool for parents of kids with Type 1 Diabetes, called the "In Real Life: Back-to-School Toolkit" which is being rolled out in Diabetes Clinics across Australia.

This Toolkit was put together with the assistance of Diabetes Educators, Paediatric Endocrinologists, representatives of the Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group (APEG), the Australian Diabetes Council, Diabetes Australia, JDRF Australia, teachers in Australian schools AND a number of parents of Australian kids with Type 1 Diabetes - including myself and a number of current and former members of the Parents of Aussie Kids with Type 1 Diabetes Support Network!

At present this publication is being provided to families of newly diagnosed children however if you have a child diagnosed prior to school age and would like a copy of this Toolkit to help you prepare yourself and your child for starting school (including pre-school) you should contact your Diabetes Educator or Paediatrician and ask them to obtain a copy from Eli Lilly Australia on your behalf.

Below are links to documents and websites which contain useful information as well as printable and downloadable forms that you can customise for your own child.

Where there is no link available for a specific document there will be a link to a website where that document can be downloaded in Word or PDF format.

Remember - even though these documents may not necessarily have been produced by the Department of Education or other agency in your particular state there is NO NATIONAL School Management Plan for Type 1 Diabetes in Australia.

You DO NOT have to use the plan devised by the Department of Education in your particular state in the event that you believe that that plan does not adequately reflect the level of care required by your child.

You should use whatever plan you are comfortable with (customised for your child's circumstances) since the provision of a Management Plan is the responsibility of the Parent.
